The Health Benefits of Learning Piano

Beyond the simple pleasure of learning how to play the piano, the physical and mental benefits have long been recognised and backed by science. Playing the piano is particularly beneficial in 3 areas of the brain: the motor, visual, and auditory cortices.

It sharpens fine motor skills, improves dexterity, and hand-eye coordination. Music has also been shown to reduce heart and respiratory rates, cardiac complications, lower blood pressure, and increase immune response and memory, as well as relieve stress, loneliness, depression, and boredom.

Another benefit of learning to play the piano later in life is that it may slow the effects of aging. Scientific studies have found that those who take up the piano at an advanced age have higher levels of Human Growth Hormone, which slows down the aging process.

Because of the way in which playing the piano stimulates the brain, learning to play may also be helpful in preventing brain diseases such as dementia and Alzheimer’s. Read my blog post for more information on how piano lessons can help your physical and mental well-being.

Benefits

"I've always wanted to learn how to play the piano, but I never had the time to go to lessons. Online piano lessons were the perfect solution for me. I could learn from my own home and plan lessons around my work. I highly recommend it."
